Advantages Of A Patio Or Backyard Firepits And How To Build One
January 15th, 2010Many back yards are enhanced by modern day firepits. Fire pits are very reminiscent of the camping life and can bring back memories of bon fires during the teen age years that were set to commemorate a favorite sport or summer bon fires when everyone got together to meet and have fun. Even in the old west people sat around a camp fire to sing and tell stories. Today you can still do these things with a modern fire pit and even spear some marshmallows on a stick and roast them in the fire. You can purchase pits to match any decor or landscape and it will allow you to stay outside longer after the summer wanes. It is even possible to build your own pit.
Patio shops, hardware stores, and discount department stores all have fire pits for sale that are very portable. You can find them in iron, steel, clay and many other materials. It is possible to create your own pit that is permanently in your back yard of affixed to the patio. The only thing you have to do is decide if you want to use a wood burning pit or opt for a gas pit.
Nothing is more comfortable than the flickering light from the flames of a fire pit. These flames give off enough heat to keep everyone warm even if it is quite cold. You can cook food on a pit as long as it is equipped properly. Cooking on a wood pit gives the food a great flavor. You can buy portable pits that have a grill to place over top of the pit so you can use it like a barbecue. Should you build a pit yourself you can always include a grate that fits over top for cooking.
You can find all kinds of wood fueled portable pits in stores. Many times they have legs made of iron and they hold a dish like structure made of copper. This dish like bowl contains the wood and a mesh screen goes securely over top of the bowl so that nothing falls out to scorch the floor of the patio. You can pick up a portable pit for about $40 and up to $150 and they come in many different sizes and in a variety of shapes.
Gas fire pits can be portable or permanent structures on the patio. No wood is necessary for this type of pit. It only takes a flip of a switch to turn the gas style pits on. In some cases a match will be needed to start the flames. Gas pits do not produce smoke so if you do not wish to get smoke in the eyes and be able to sit all around the pit, this is the type for you. The real advantage to gas fire pits is that they do not need to be cleaned like the wood burning pits do. Gas pits come in a variety of styles, shapes and sizes and generally cost a bit more than the wood burning fire pits do. Expect to pay about $150 to $300 for a gas powered fire pit and if they are built and installed in a patio expect to pay more.
If you want to build your own fire pit it can be done easily and cheaply. Pick a place in the yard that is not near anything that could remotely catch on fire from an escaping spark. Then check with the utility company to make sure there are no water or gas lines under where you wish to place the fire pit. Spray an outline of the shape you wish to make the pit on the ground with landscaping spray paint or any spray paint. Remove any turf that might be inside the confines of your shape then start digging to the depth of 1 foot making sure the sides of the hole are relatively straight. A perfect fire pit hole will be about 8 inches in diameter and about a foot deep. If you want to make a bigger pit you can but make it a little bit deeper the wider you go.
Now that you have a hole you need to fill it with something to keep the pit dry and drained well. Place 4 inches of gravel in the bottom and try to get it to go up the sides as far as possible. Add 3 to 4 inches of sand up as far as possible. Concrete pavers should be placed around the perimeter of the pit and they should be stacked about 6 to 10 inches above the hole. You can use cement blocks, bricks, and large rocks as well. Never use anything to hold the material together because many adhesives contain chemicals that are toxic when they get hot. All that is left to do is place wood in the hole not to come up over the walls above the ground, and set it ablaze. If the weather is wet it is possible for the pit to flood and it will be necessary to wait to use it until it dries out a bit. These types of pits also need to be cleaned out periodically by digging out all the old ash. Another layer of gravel should be added after cleaning.
Enjoy a rustic hand hewn fire pit, a more civilized portable wood burning fire pit or an elegant gas burning fire pit. Watching the fire will be relaxing and entice much conversation and good will at your next patio or back yard barbecue.
