Getting Started in Home Gardening

October 31st, 2009

Being around flowers, plants and gardens in general relaxes the mind and is very therapeutic for most people. This is why a lot people of taken up the hobby of gardening in their spare time.

Some are intimidated to try it as a leisure pursuit because they feel they don’t have the skills and enough know-how about the subject matter in order to start with. Surprisingly, there are only a few things to take note of if you want to start your garden.

First of all, think about type of plant you want in your gardens. If you love to be surrounded by flowers, then a colorful flower garden is for you. You can go with a beautiful rose garden. You can also include daisies, different kinds of mums, gerberas, and lilies. They say variety is the spice of life. Not only will other kinds of flowers break the monotony, they will lend more texture, character and more color to your growing garden.

If you love to cook and want fresh, garden grown herbs, tomatoes and greens around, you may want to go for an herb garden or a small vegetable garden in your backyard. That way, you get your “therapy” and you’ll have fresh herbs and greens all the time! It is a good idea to do alternate planting. This is only applicable for your vegetables though. To give you an idea, here is an example. Let’s say you’ve been planting one particular variety of potatoes for several seasons. After you harvest your crops, plant a different variety for the next season. Not only will it do your soul good, it will be good for your soil also. But don’t be too absorbed by the technicality of the whole thing. Just enjoy it.

Once you’ve figured out what kind of plants you want, it’s time to get your gear ready. Make your gardening experience fun. You will need the right tools to help you dig and water your soil. You don’t need high-tech or complicated equipment. A sturdy shovel and hoe, pails will help you dig, rake and water your soil. You will need comfortable work clothes; old jeans and shirts will be perfect for the job. You need boots to keep your feet warm and dry, gloves to keep your hands clean, some rags to wipe off dirt. A nice hat will protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Make sure the size of your hat is big enough to protect your face from the heat. Stylish sunglasses will keep the sun out of your eyes. A towel helps keep sweat dripping all over your face. Keep a water bottle always beside you. You’d want to be able to stay as long outdoors as possible. Drinking enough water will keep you cool, hydrated and energized as you build your garden.

For maintenance, a sprinkler will be a great tool to help maintain your garden. Installing a sprinkler will ensure that your plants are watered and will free you from having to hurry home to just to look over your plants.

To make your perfect garden, you just need a little bit of planning, some creativity, some patience and of course, some elbow grease. Don’t get too caught up in the details and enjoy your new hobby!

A Perfect Garden – It’s all in the Planning!

October 30th, 2009

It’s warming up outside and spending time in the garden may well soon be on your mind. If you want to realise those aspirations of creating the ultimate outdoor room, then now is the time to get to work!

Due to the rather unreliable weather we experience in the UK, most homeowners only ever wake up to the potential of the garden as an additional outside living space during the warmer months of spring and summer. If you have grand designs for your garden, you need to start the planning process well in advance. Given the current trend for “don’t move, improve” it is quite likely that 2009 will see more and more homeowner’s spending money on their existing properties in an effort to create the ideal home and garden.

With everyone’s idea of the ideal garden being somewhat different, improvements are an extremely personal thing. In the current financial climate with belts being tightened, achieving you dream garden design is still absolutely possible.

A Safe Place to Play!

Does the garden provide a stimulating and fun play environment that is safe for the kids? Child proofing the outdoor space spans a whole host of issues such as the review of existing perimeter fencing (how secure is it?); removal of dangerous plants / trees; replacement of chipped / broken pavers; installation of an approved children’s play surface to ensure added safety around fixed play equipment e.g. slides / swings; installation of a year round outdoor play area in the guise of a decked or paved patio.

Remember to think long term when installing safety measures in the garden, what may prove safe for a toddler today could become a potential hazard for a curious six year old.

Dream Driveway

Is parking a nightmare in you street? If it is, off street parking can give you peace of mind! There is no fun at all in endlessly searching for a space at the end of a long days work. Consider enhancing your property with a well designed driveway, creating a stress free, clean and smart way to park.

Remember that following the introduction of legislation which came into effect in October 2008, unless you are working with a permeable driveway paving product you may require planning permission to pave over a front garden.

The Good Life

Another area of you new garden design that can easily be overlooked is that of a “grow your own” zone. This can be a wonderful way of cutting your grocery bills and raised beds can make the whole process easier.

Entertaining The Outdoor Way!

If you are like me then you’ll enjoy the more informal dinner party that is possible in a garden dinning area. Good lighting, practical access to the kitchen, a nice patio or decked surface and of course a lovely barbecue make this all possible. Consider every aspect of this when going through the planning stage, as it’s way more practical and economical to include this early on in the process than to add it as an after thought.

Once you’ve had a chance to think through the changes you want to make to your outdoor space, it pays to bring in the professionals and seek guidance on a realistic price which should detail all the installation and labour costs, along with an anticipated time frame.
